Running an Elasticsearch cluster using Docker (Windows).

This blog contains a guide on how to deploy a small Elasticsearch cluster for testing and development purposes on a windows host using Docker.

If you haven’t already, follow the steps at docker.com to download and install docker.
Using command prompt (type ‘cmd’ from the windows search bar), use the docker network create command and name your network elastic. Opening cmd from search should place you in your user folder where you can run or edit the docker file. If for any reason it opens in a different directory use the ‘cd’ command to navigate to your user directly (cd C:\Users\demo1).
Use the ‘docker pull’ command to download the latest Elasticsearch container.
Once the Elasticsearch container is successfully downloaded. Initiate the container with the following ‘run’ command. Once complete, the output will contain your elastic password and an enrolment token for Kibana so that you can join it to the Elasticsearch instance.
Copy the SSL cert from the docker to your local machine.
Download and run the container for Kibana.
When Kibana starts, a link will be generated (Go to http://localhost:5601/?code=471795 to get started). Opening this in your browser will give you the portal to paste your enrolment token from the Elasticsearch.
Welcome to Elasticsearch. Log in with the username: elastic and the password generated when you started the Elasticsearch container. For now skip ‘Add integrations’ and go to ‘Explore on my own’.
There are several demo datasets complete with visualisations that can be quickly added for training purposes. You can use these datasets to learn the Kibana Query Language (KQL) to get to grips with searching this data in the discover application.
When you have finished testing conduct the following clean up tasks. Stop Kibana and Elasticsearch, remove the Elastic network and remove both containers.

Generative AI and a Threat to National Security

Introduction

In recent years, Artificial Intelligence and Generative Artificial Intelligence have become hot topics primarily for negative reasons. For these reasons, the Centre for Emerging Technology and Security (CETaS) has produced a full report of all issues and solutions associated with the use of Generative AI ¹.

But what exactly is Generative and what is the impact on society? Generative AI refers to AI techniques that can be used to create or produce various types of content including text, images, audio, and video. The most popular AI, and no doubt the one that most people have heard of, is ChatGPT (Generative Pre-Trained Transformer). This is a Large Language Model (LLM) with an estimated 100 million monthly active users as of January 2023 ², which increased to 180 million users in August 2023 ³.

Generative AI offers various advantages, but it also presents several concerns, including bias, hallucinations (in which the response appears convincing and true but is entirely fabricated, potentially leading to misinformation), and inadequate common-sense reasoning ⁴.

As already highlighted ChatGPT has millions of users with 18% of adults in the USA reporting that they have used ChatGPT, and with such a fast pace in the increase of users means the chances of misuse are also going to increase specifically associated with misinformation and highly deceptive disinformation and the use of deepfakes. This makes it extremely challenging to tackle online disinformation.

Businesses and Organisations also need to be aware of the dangers and risks posed by using generative AI due to the use of it by employees specifically associated with the sharing of sensitive and confidential information.

Below is an exploration of threats associated with the use of generative AI taken from the center for emerging technology and security (CETaS) 5. So, the threats are very serious and need to be explored further to help with awareness as well as what needs to be done as these technologies advance, especially as the advance is so rapid. This blog post highlights some of the threats posed by generative AI as well as what the future looks like and how changes need to be made now to ensure security and safety.

AI can assist less technically inclined users in exploring new cyberattack techniques and gradually increasing their sophistication. Generative AI and Chat GPT can also be used by malicious actors to engage in Phishing mail attacks and social engineering attacks. Phishing emails can simplify the process of launching complex attacks, even for less technically minded individuals.

The effectiveness and stealth of phishing attacks can be significantly heightened by leveraging Chat GPT’s capability to learn communication patterns from trusted sources. Perpetrators exploit a sense of urgency and fear to manipulate victims into hasty actions, bypassing proper scrutiny. Attackers can train the AI using historical data to craft convincing, seemingly authentic emails. Although safety measures are in place, there is evidence to suggest that these safeguards can be circumvented by exploiting the AI, essentially “jailbreaking” it. Subsequently, the AI can be commanded to perform actions, known as “Do Anything Now” (DAN). 5

There is also evidence to suggest that Chat GPT has the ability to be exploited by threat actors to create malicious code. Again the threat actor is able to use the DAN command as previously highlighted. Furthermore the evidence also suggests that it is able to replicate code for the NotPetya malware attack⁵ This malware attack, attacks critical files to make systems unusable and also encrypts files. ⁶

Generative AI introduces a worrisome aspect of social engineering, wherein threat actors manipulate victims to obtain sensitive information. Leveraging the AI’s understanding of human context and language fluency, the acquired data can be transformed into persuasive communications like emails or texts, posing a significant risk.⁷

Radicalisation and Terrorism

The ability for individuals to build personalised connections with AI chatbots, facilitated by their constant availability and endless patience, has the potential to reshape the blueprint for radicalisation. Nevertheless, there is a fundamentally human aspect to this phenomenon that current generative AI is unlikely to replicate in the near future.

Political security

Political disinformation and electoral interference

Generative AI has the potential to significantly amplify political disinformation. For instance, Facebook ads have attempted to sway voters by using deepfake videos of Moldova’s pro-Western president. Moreover, Russian disinformation efforts have harnessed generative AI in the conflict with Ukraine ⁸.

Targeting and fraud

Fraudsters stand to benefit significantly from generative AI. Qualitatively, generative AI can assist fraudsters with improved spear phishing campaigns.

Weapon instruction

The availability of publicly accessible yet obscure information reduces the distance to crucial data needed for devising and carrying out an attack strategy.

Surveillance, monitoring, and geopolitical fragmentation

Generative AI could play an important role in furthering the global proliferation of technology which adheres to authoritarian standards and values, aiding attempts to enforce single versions of historical truth for future generations. Democracies may be more vulnerable to the exploitation of the creative characteristics of generative AI systems than autocracies. This emphasises the need to understand the cultural and behavioural aspects to generative AI use around the world.

Child sexual abuse material

The growing presence of AI-generated CSAM presents a major concern for law enforcement agencies. The challenge of discerning authentic images from fabricated ones is becoming increasingly complex, leading to the risk of undetected false negatives. Additionally, there is a risk of false positives, potentially causing law enforcement to allocate resources to investigating images of children who have not suffered physical abuse, diverting attention from those in need.

Advantages of generative AI

Enhancing individual productivity is the primary function of generative AI. It operates as a ‘cognitive co-pilot’ by assisting in the direction, collection, processing, and dissemination of information. However, it is important to deploy generative AI cautiously and involve frequent human validation, especially in these early stages of its development and integration.

Malicious AI Threats

Political security: AI is utilised to automate tasks related to surveillance, persuasion, and deception, as well as to devise new attacks that exploit an enhanced ability to analyse human behaviors, moods, and beliefs using available data.

Digital security: AI is utilised to automate tasks related to cyberattacks, including novel attacks that exploit human vulnerabilities, existing software vulnerabilities, or the vulnerabilities of AI systems.

Physical security: AI is utilised to automate tasks related to defending physical systems against attacks, including novel attacks that compromise cyber-physical systems or involve physical systems that cannot be feasibly controlled remotely.

Adversaries

Adversaries now possess the tools needed to disrupt systems, networks, societies, and potentially economies. These adversaries fall into three categories when it comes to malicious AI.

The Future

One suggested approach to managing the creation of content and information involves the use of watermarking. However, it’s important to recognise that this method could be circumvented by malicious actors. Other strategies to uphold the authenticity of content include the implementation of strong privacy and data protection measures. Additionally, educating and raising awareness among users is crucial to help them recognise and evade potential risks associated with Generative AI and chatbots. It is essential to maintain a human-centered approach, ensuring human involvement in all facets of AI utilisation. Transparency is also key, as users need to comprehend the limitations of AI. Governance and a regulatory framework is also another area that requires more attention as there are no specific international rules on how to deal with the proliferation of AI. However, The European Union has recently created the EU’s AI Act, which addresses the risk of AI and ensures that Europeans can trust the AI ¹⁰. Furthermore Last October (2023) The US president issued an executive order on Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence ¹¹. This suggests that leaders and politicians are understanding the need for regulations, frameworks and laws to assist with ensuring AI can be trusted and is safe to use.

How to Activate Office

Activate over the Internet

In the Activation Wizard, select I want to activate the software over the Internet, and then select Next. If nothing happens when you select Next, use the Enter key on your keyboard.
Follow the prompts to complete the activation process. If activation fails, see Troubleshoot activation errors.

Activate by telephone

If this option is disabled, it’s because you’re using Microsoft 365, which doesn’t support telephone activation.

If you see the message “Telephone activation is no longer supported for your product“, you can ignore this error and call the numbers for your specific country/region listed in this article.

In the Activation Wizard, select I want to activate the software by telephone, and then select Next. If nothing happens when you select Next, use the Enter key on your keyboard.
Under Step 1 in the Activation Wizard, select your country/region, and then call the Product Activation Center phone number that’s listed under the country/region you selected.
When prompted by the Product Activation Center, provide the Installation ID that’s shown in the Activation Wizard under Step 2.
The Product Activation Center will provide a Confirmation ID that you enter in the Activation Wizard under Step 3.
Select Next and follow the prompts to complete the activation process. If nothing happens when you select Next, use the Enter key on your keyboard. If activation fails, see Troubleshoot activation errors.

How to install Office LTSC 2021

This article contains a step-by-step guide on how to install Office LTSC 2021 on Windows.

Download

Visit https://www.microsoft.com/en-US/download/details.aspx?id=49117 to download and run the Office Deployment Tool (ODT). Choose your language and select Download

Right click the downloaded file and run as administrator

Accept the Terms & Conditions

Extract the file to a location of your choosing, in our example we’ve opted for the Desktop. This is relevant for the installation process using the Command Prompt (CMD)

Once the files have been extracted, navigate to the containing folder. Open the “configuration-Office2021Enterprise” XML file in Notepad. Right-click on the file > Open with > Notepad. If Notepad isn’t available, select Choose another app and select Notepad from the list.

Replace the contents with the extract below

In the Example above, we are installing Office LTSC Standard 2021, if it is necessary to install another version or a different product, change the Product ID: <Product ID=”Desired Product ID”>

Install

Open Command Prompt (CMD) as an administrator

Navigate to the folder containing the extracted files, in this example it is the Desktop.

cd Desktop
setup /download configuration-Office2021Enterprise.xml

You won’t receive any confirmation of progress except for a new link appearing on the command prompt. When it does, start the installation by running the following command

setup /configure configuration-Office2021Enterprise.xml

The installation will start immediately

Connect to VPN on Startup Before Login

If like me you have a need to establish a VPN from a host to another or even to a secure management network, you might like to configure your host device to establish a connection at boot rather than lose remote connectivity if the device reboots. In my case I chose to use OpenVPN Cloud as it was a simple 2 node requirement, I was able to get the host specific configuration by following the guide from https://openvpn.net, check it out here https://openvpn.net/cloud-docs/switching-to-manual-profile-distribution-creating-a-device/

To achieve this using OpenVPN, simply download and install the OpenVPN client most suited to your environment https://openvpn.net/index.php/open-source/downloads.html

Install the client, this guide assumes the defaults. Once complete, place your configuration file in the folder C:\Program Files\OpenVPN\config\ and open Task Scheduler. Click Action followed by Create Task, name the task and provide a description as appropriate. Select the Run whether user is logged on or not and set Run with highest priveleges, change the Operating system for which the task is meant.

Click the Triggers tab, New and change the task to begin At startup. I set the task to delay for 1 minute but that is entirely up to you, once you’re happy click OK. Click the Actions tab, with the Action set to be Start a program and enter the following under Program/script;

"C:\Program Files\OpenVPN\bin\openvpn-gui.exe"

Add the arguments to ensure the correct profile is selected

--connect YourVPNFileNameHere.ovpn

Next click on the Conditions tab and deselect everything, unless you want one of the settings enable. We then open the Settings tab but leave all of the defaults, only adding a tick for Run task as soon as possible after a scheduled start is missed, just in case the host gets caught up with other processes. Then we just press OK.

Then all that is left is to test it.

Connect to AzureAD

Quite often the basic logic of how to connect to Azure Active Directory with PowerShell is omitted in so many of these how to guides and for this reason I’ve added the references below. If for no other reason than to allow me to refer back to in the future.

If your machine meets the prerequisites, the following command will install the General Availability version of the module on your computer

Prior to any cmdlets being run, the Connect-AzureAD command should be run in PowerShell. Running this command will prompt for credentials which can be pre-empted using the $AzureAdCred = Get-Credential command.

Ad-blocking with Pi-Hole

The days of needing browser plugins to block unwanted ad traffic on home networks are well and truly over and Pi-Hole just keeps delivering more and more stable innovation. There are numerous options when configuring the setup, Raspberry Pi, Docker image, virtual host or even an old physical device. Ultimately as long as you have a Linux flavour installed (see Prerequisites) it should function pretty nicely but for the sake of this guide, I will assume the Operating System (OS) has been cleanly installed on your platform of choice. Ensure you have a static IP assigned (easiest to assign this at build) and that ssh is configured to remote allow access to the host.

Log onto the host or ssh to get command line access, once complete type the below into the command line interface (CLI) and hit Enter. If it asks for your password you, it needs to be able to elevate privilege to install, once entered it will progress.

If you prefer to see the code and subsequently run it then navigate to the folder you want to clone the repository to and run the following commands

Confirmation that the installation is progressing will present like Screen 1 below, followed by a sequence of information screens. Subsequently you’ll be asked to choose your preferred DNS provider (Screen 3), in my case I chose cloudflare. The next page asks for confirmation of the third party block lists, any of which can be removed if you so wish.

Next choose whether the Pi-Hole will be responding to IPv4 and/or IPv6 traffic. Now you’ll be asked to confirm the hosts IP address and gateway, which can be changed if necessary, once complete the Pi-Hole warns that statically assigned IP’s used in conjunction with DHCP can cause conflicts. Would you like the web admin interface to be installed (well you can’t see the analytics without it) and whether you want to install the web server to support the admin interface (if you have a web server installed you don’t need this one). Do you want to log the queries, well I’d hope so to be able to see the analytics. Finally you can choose the level of logging, whether domains should be hidden etc, I choose to see everything.

If an error message pops up claiming that the Pi-Hole is not able to resolve dns, it is probably trying to lookup against itself so use the following command

sudo nano /etc/resolv.conf

Find the entry for “nameserver” and change the IP to your chosen provider, in my case 1.1.1.1 or 1.0.0.1. Save the changes and progress to the next stage.

Once the command finishes running the script, Pi-Hole is pretty much installed, running the following command allows you to set the password for the admin console;

sudo pihole -a -p

Enter a sensibly complex password and store it in a password manager, then navigate to the web console by typing the IP into your browser. You’ll notice it’s not really doing anything so don’t forget to set your router DNS to point at your Pi-Hole’s IP address, or just a laptop, PC, phone in order to test how things are working, then you should be able to see the traffic flowing in over time like this.

Well that is it for the basic configuration, enjoy the analytics and ad blocking.

DNS security for all

Cloudflare have been pounding the security drum for years and I have always looked for financially viable solutions that help me stay safer than the next guy. After recently listening to the Security Now (https://twit.tv/shows/security-now) and Troy Hunt (https://www.troyhunt.com/my-weekly-updates-are-now-available-as-an-audio-podcast/) podcasts, I was intrigued about what Cloudflare could offer me on the go and there it was, 1.1.1.1 which has been a DNS offering to rival Google’s 8.8.8.8 for a short while now but Cloudflare have rolled it into an app that performs similarly to a VPN (I appreciate this is an over simplification). Using the offering on an iPhone gives me an on demand DNS directory over https or tls (depending on your preferences) which is faster than any other DNS provider.
